Reconfiguration: Paradigm - Context

A modern practice of tradition structure in Huangshan, Anhui

Inheritance, study, innovation -- every kind of progress has to go through this process, and the same is true for the development of the economy. Since the economic base determines the development of other projects, architecture tends to change along with the economy. Forty years ago, China, the world's largest developing country, was filled with outdated and old rammed earth buildings. As times change and the economy develops, these rammed earth buildings not only reach the end of their useful life but also often fail to meet the spiritual needs of the local population, thus requiring a new form of indigenous architecture.

In Huangshan City, Anhui Province, Shendu County, surrounded by mountains, had many residents leave their hometowns for big cities twenty years ago due to the inconvenience of transportation and topographical restrictions. While time brings hope to the residents, it also gives them the dream to further develop their hometown. Having lived in the same complex before, the residents want to live in the same complex with enough privacy.

This project starts with the residents' dream of building a small community with five different households sharing a unique garden in a scenic area along the Xin'an River. We tried to provide residents with fantastic mountain views while meeting the need for privacy as much as possible while using traditional Chinese architectural forms to dissipate the height of the terrain and hide the clash of modern elements with the surroundings.
